ISO 26262 voted to become International Standard

Mecel has since 2005 been involved in a working group dedicated to set a new international standard for Functional Safety of Automotive Systems. The new standard, ISO 26262, is now approved and can be used instead of the available standards on functional safety like IEC 61508.

The working group for Functional Safety was established to develop a standard on functional safety for the automotive industry. Nine countries have been actively involved in the working group; Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, United Kingdom and USA. Mecel has taken part in the Swedish standard group and has had one expert working in the international group where a total of 30 representatives from the automotive industry took part.

The new standard was recently unanimously voted trough as the new international standard and all ten parts were approved. With the upcoming publication of the new standard ISO 26262, the automotive industry initiates the development of a new state of the art within the area of functional safety.

Available standards on functional safety, such as IEC 61508, are not dedicated to the automotive industry. The new standard, ISO 26262, can be used instead of IEC 61508 and will suit the dynamic automotive industry much better.” Dr. Hakan Sivencrona, M.Sc.E.E. System Safety Engineer, explains. “With a steady increase of electronics in vehicles a need for a new and improved standard is obvious,” he continues.

ISO 26262 will be released in early 2011 as international standard. It is a process standard and a product standard and will take some time to fully integrate. Mecel is active in a number of projects to implement ISO 26262. Besides that Mecel also offers training courses on the new ISO ISO 26262 standard.
