PRESS RELEASE - Mecel Betula, a Cost-Effective Mobile Bluetooth Development Product is now available for PC-evaluation
Göteborg, Sweden – Mecel Betula is a comprehensive software product that enables the addition of Bluetooth functionality to vehicles. Mecel Betula provides an easy way for manufacturers to adapt to the ever-changing market of consumer devices. Since April, 2009, Mecel Betula has been available in a PC-version at no cost. The PC-version comes as a simulated head unit with an attractive HMI and allows key features to be tested. In addition, the Mecel Betula Interoperability program helps vehicle manufacturers ensure that more cell phones are compatible with their vehicles.
Mecel AB, a subsidiary of Delphi Corporation, has been committed to
the development of Bluetooth since its birth in 1998. Mecel
remains one of the leading software development companies in the
automotive industry.
“In the Mecel Betula Software Development Kit we have incorporated
lessons learned and extensive Bluetooth knowledge to give our customers
an easy way to keep up-to-date with the fast-moving market of consumer
electronics,” said Jonas Norell, product manager at Mecel
AB.
The Mecel Betula SDK
provides the automotive industry with a comprehensive Bluetooth
software product. It contains the majority of applications needed to
deliver full Bluetooth functionality with an easy-to-use interface for
creating quality software. The software can be created rapidly and
cost-effectively resulting in less work for end-product
developers.
In order to demonstrate the strengths of Mecel Betula SDK, a PC-version
was developed – Mecel’s
Betula Head Unit Concept. The concept provides a unique opportunity
to evaluate Bluetooth automotive features before end product
implementation. The Mecel Betula Head Unit Concept will be demonstrated
at Mecel’s booth (72) at the 14th International VDI Congress
"Electronic Systems for Vehicles" in Baden-Baden on October 7 and 8,
2009.
While Bluetooth devices are certified according to standards provided
by the Bluetooth SIG organization, the interoperability between devices
may still fail due to new combinations of devices.
“It’s difficult for the manufacturer to communicate to customers
which mobile phones currently work with a specific vehicle’s radio or
explain that future compatibility can’t guaranteed. Therefore, it
is essential to test and evaluate system performance between mobile
phones and other Bluetooth devices", said Jakob Hjelmåker,
business manager at Mecel AB.
Mecel has an extensive interoperability testing program that works for
a majority of the phones currently on the market. Testing continues on
new phones released. Mecel has also established close relationships
with all leading mobile phone manufacturers to make sure potential
interoperability issues are solved.

“Testing will generate a large database that describes the
interoperability between phones and Bluetooth devices,” Hjelmåker
said. “With Mecel Betula SDK, manufacturers will no longer have any
uncertainties about compatibility and will be able to provide valuable
information to the end-customer.”
According to Mecel officials, more vehicles manufacturers are including
Bluetooth in the design of their vehicles to deliver ultimate
functionality – and to enhance safety for drivers. The use of Bluetooth
has increased rapidly in vehicles for hands-free telephones. It is also
in future product plans for multimedia and navigation control.
